The white washed village of Frigiliana

Frigiliana is an ideal day-long escape from the bustle of the coastal tourism.

Barely 5km inland from Nerja and 1,000 feet above sea level  lies one of the most beautiful villages of Spain that has won many national and regional awards to prove it. With a population of around 2,000 it is cared for day-by-day, to keep up its high standards. Situated in the foothills of the Almijara mountain range, Frigiliana has spectacular views of the Higueron River which lies in the Chillar Valley. It has a sub-tropical climate which has attracted population since pre-history. The Romans built a fort here but unfortunately it no longer remains. The history of the village is pictured in 12 mosaics in the old quarter, created by Pilar Garcia Mill

Another spectacular view of the village from high on the hill.
Certainly a good walk up, but definitely worth the view.
Why not stop for a beer (or even two) and Tapas on the way down.

As you enter Frigiliana park at the bottom - don't be tempted to drive into the heart of the village, you will end up getting stuck and very frustrated.

As you wander the steep and narrow streets you can imagine where donkeys once walked. Brightly painted houses with colourful doors adorn the narrow passages. At the top you will find an interesting if not plain church. Opposite is a pleasant square to rest and enjoy a traditional meal. There are many fine restaurants hiding away and you must seek them out. The mirador at the top has particularly impressive views while you eat.

You will find ample tiny shops in which to buy the local handicrafts which include fine basketware, linen and lace, as well as beautiful ceramic wares, but you will not find supermarkets and large stores.

Town Hall
Though the town hall is just one more white house, like the others, you can tell it is the town hall by the flags fluttering outside. In addition there is a plaque which says: 'Frigiliana. This city was visited the 23th of June 1998 by their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain'.

At the foot of the village you will find new houses being built but unusually, they have been kept in character with the rest of the village - white painted and very square in design. The village has a very European occupancy including many retired English people escaping the tourism of the coast around Nerja.

Only joking.
Just wanted to remind you of what you are escaping from
All in all a fine village that lives up to its reputation. We enjoyed it immensely and we feel sure you will too.
Just one word of warning, this is definitely a "hill town", so you will require your best legs on.
